Roadway Express, Inc.

The creation and expansion of Roadway Express closely parallels the growth of trucking as an industry. The motor carrier industry of today moves more than 75% of the nation’s economic product, employs more than 7 million people and pays more than $20 billion in annual taxes.

Here is a brief history of events that highlight Roadways survival as one of leading  LTL (less-than-truckload)  motor carriers in the trucking industry.

1930 - Carroll Roush and “Chick” Morrison begin R&M Transportation to move tires between the Akron, Ohio and St. Louis, Missouri.
1930 - Galen Roush, leaves his law practice and joins brother, Carroll, at the newly-founded trucking company. Galen would become the dynamic force who forged the modern Roadway Express.
1930 - The company shows a profit by early July, despite the economic depression that gripped the nation.
1930 - In November the company adopts the Roadway name and Roadway Express, Inc. is established.
1931 - Roadway establishes its presence in fifteen major markets, hiring independent drivers, using their own equipment.
1935 - The company begins purchasing trailers, they were among the first with electrical lighting, a technological safety innovation at the time.
1942 - Roadway is recognized as an “Emergency Production Facility” and helps with wartime efforts on the home front.
